What this calculator does

Counts drywall panels for a wall from its area, using a fixed panel size of 1.2 m by 2.4 m.

How to use it

  1. Enter wall width and height.
  2. Set waste for cuts around openings.
  3. Read the number of panels.

Formula

Area = Width × Height
panels = roundUp( Area / 2.88 × (1 + Waste Margin (%) / 100) )

Formulas are shown in metric units, exactly as the calculator computes them. Imperial entries are converted to metric first. Waste is applied as a multiplier (1 + waste/100).

Areas are in m² and volumes in m³. RoundUp means the next whole piece or bag.

Worked example

Using the default values of this calculator (Width = 4 m, Height = 2.5 m, Waste Margin (%) = 10 %), the calculator returns:

Area = 4 × 2.5
panels = roundUp( Area / 2.88 × (1 + 10 / 100) )
  • Drywall Panels: 4 panels

Assumptions and limitations

  • The panel size is fixed at 2.88 m²; other sizes need manual scaling.
  • Openings are not subtracted.

Waste, rounding and buying

Panels are whole units, so the result is rounded up. Tall walls may need different board lengths to avoid joints.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use other panel sizes?
Divide the calculator area by your own panel area instead. The fixed size is 1.2 m x 2.4 m.
Does it include joint compound or screws?
No, only panels.
