What this calculator does

Estimates tonnes of asphalt for a driveway or path from area and compacted depth.

How to use it

  1. Enter width and length.
  2. Enter layer depth in centimeters.
  3. Set waste and read tonnes.

Formula

baseVolume = Width × Length × Depth/100
metric tonnes = baseVolume × 2.4 × (1 + Waste Margin (%) / 100)

Formulas are shown in metric units, exactly as the calculator computes them. Imperial entries are converted to metric first. Waste is applied as a multiplier (1 + waste/100).

Areas are in m² and volumes in m³. Centimeters are divided by 100 to give meters.

Worked example

Using the default values of this calculator (Width = 3 m, Length = 10 m, Depth = 5 cm, Waste Margin (%) = 10 %), the calculator returns:

baseVolume = 3 × 10 × 5/100
metric tonnes = baseVolume × 2.4 × (1 + 10 / 100)
  • Asphalt Needed: 3.96 t

Assumptions and limitations

  • Uses a fixed density of 2.4 t/m³; mixes vary.
  • Base preparation and compaction loss are not included.

Waste, rounding and buying

Asphalt is delivered hot by the tonne and cannot be stored. Order after preparing the base and ask the supplier to confirm the quantity.

Frequently asked questions

Is asphalt DIY-friendly?
Hot asphalt usually requires contractor equipment. The calculator only estimates quantity.
What depth should I enter?
Use the finished compacted thickness specified for the job.
