What this calculator does
Counts tiles for a rectangular floor from the room size and tile size, plus a cutting allowance.
How to use it
- Enter room width and length.
- Enter tile width and length in centimeters.
- Choose a waste margin: higher for diagonal layouts or small rooms.
Formula
tileArea = (Tile Width/100) × (Tile Length/100) tiles = roundUp( Width × Length / tileArea × (1 + Waste Margin (%) / 100) )
Formulas are shown in metric units, exactly as the calculator computes them. Imperial entries are converted to metric first. Waste is applied as a multiplier (1 + waste/100).
Areas are in m² and volumes in m³. Centimeters are divided by 100 to give meters. RoundUp means the next whole piece or bag.
Variables
| Variable | Unit | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Width | m | 3 |
| Length | m | 4 |
| Tile Width | cm | 30 |
| Tile Length | cm | 30 |
| Waste Margin (%) | % | 10 |
Worked example
Using the default values of this calculator (Width = 3 m, Length = 4 m, Tile Width = 30 cm, Tile Length = 30 cm, Waste Margin (%) = 10 %), the calculator returns:
tileArea = (30/100) × (30/100) tiles = roundUp( 3 × 4 / tileArea × (1 + 10 / 100) )
- Tiles Needed: 147 tiles
Assumptions and limitations
- Grout joints are not included in the tile size; enter the tile size plus joint if you want to count them.
- Room is assumed rectangular with no obstacles.
Waste, rounding and buying
Tiles are sold in boxes; round to full boxes. Keep spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs because shades vary.
Frequently asked questions
- What waste should I use for tiles?
- Straight layouts often use less than diagonal ones, which need more cuts. The calculator applies whatever percentage you enter.
- Should I include the grout joint?
- Add the joint width to both tile dimensions to count tile plus joint.
